Ron’s Top Ten Tips for Beginner Knitters

I’m not just a dyer; I’ve been teaching knitting for more than seven years now.  In that time, I’ve seen quite a few beginner knitters.  Here’s what I’ve learned and what I think a beginner knitter needs to know besides just how to knit and purl.  There’s no order to these tips, but the last one in the list is the most important in my mind and will absolutely define you and your knitting journey.  So read on!

  1. Relax, it’s not a death match between you and the yarn!  If your knuckles are turning white and you’ve cut off the circulation to your fingers from wrapping the yarn like a mutant cat’s cradle, you need to relax!  Besides, tight stitches make the next row of stitches even harder to knit.  Consciously ease back on the tension and you’ll find a point that gives you control of the yarn without strain.

  2. Use good needles.  I recommend this for so many reasons.  First, good needles will not catch or snag the yarn but will have some friction to help you control the yarn and stitches.  They’ll also feel better in your hands and reduce pressure points and cramping.  Don’t be afraid to try different styles of needles to find what works for you.  There are a lot of options on the market and twice as many opinions as to which ones are the best.  The best needles are the ones that feel good in your hands and make your knitting easier!

  3. Use good yarn.  Ok, one shameless plug per blog post, I think Beach Bunny Yarns makes the best yarn because I won’t dye something I’m not happy knitting for myself.  That said, there’s a lot of good yarns at various price points for you to use while building your knitting skills.  I recommend using SuperWash wool, preferably in sport, DK, or worsted weight.  If it’s a wool and nylon blend, that’s ok.  Don’t attempt to learn with cotton, linen, or silk as they have no springiness and aren’t forgiving.

  4. Be patient with the learning process and yourself.  It’s not a race and you won’t master a new skill overnight.  Take your time and think about each stitch and each movement.  Practice doesn’t make perfect; practice makes permanent.  So, make sure you’re practicing with thoughtful intent.  With careful and deliberate practice, you’ll soon find your knitting groove.

  5. Don’t stop in the middle of a row.  I tell my beginner students that unless the house is on fire, do not stop until you get to the end of the row.  Stopping in the middle of a row is the cause of most beginner problems because the beginner will inevitably restart the knitting in the wrong direction.  This is great for short rows, but not so much for a new knitter.  Always finish your rows.

  6. Count!  As a beginner, count your stitches in each row.  This helps you by ensuring that you have the expected number of stitches on the needle.  If not, you know you have a problem in the row you just knit.  It’s a good habit to get into and even experienced knitters get burned by not counting stitches on each row and will have to “tink” (unknit) several rows to correct the problem.

  7. Learn to read stitches.  As a beginner, understanding what a knit and a purl stitch look like on the needles will be a huge boost to your knitting skill.  This is literally the, “see Spot run,” of the knit world.

  8. Swatch and block, it’s worth it.  As a beginner, you’ll be making swatches for practice anyway, so get into the habit of blocking them.  Why?  Well, all patterns give you a gauge of stitches per inch to knit.  That gauge is usually measured after blocking.  When you wet a knit fabric swatch and pin it out flat to dry, it will grow and the stitches per inch will be different than the unblocked gauge.  Trying to guesstimate that difference is far too risky when making a garment, so get used to making swatches and blocking them.  You can quickly build a set of reference swatches for each needle size and yarn type that you like to use.

  9. There’s not one perfect way to knit.  In your knitting journey, I can almost guarantee that you’ll run into someone that just has to tell you that you’re not knitting correctly.  If you are making knits and purls consistently and the finished fabric is correct, ignore them.  You’ll hear terms like English, Continental, picking, flicking, throwing, etc. and opinions on what’s best.  What’s best is what works for you!  Seriously, if your finished stitches are correct, how you got there doesn’t matter and I’m happy for you!

  10. Here’s the big one and it has nothing to do with the mechanics of knitting at all.  Are you ready?  Here goes.  Don’t say, “I could never do that.”  Arrrrrgh!  That phrase makes me so mad.  That’s giving up before you even try!  Try!  Challenge yourself to do better and learn something new!  You couldn’t knit or purl until you tried, right?  So why are cables or stranded colorwork or lace any different?  Because they look hard?  So what?  Just try it!  Now I’m not saying that you must love mosaic colorwork or brioche or bobbles, but you should try new techniques and styles to find out if you like doing it or not.  Thinking negatively about your abilities is a sure way to limit your skill future.  Replace “I could never” with “I’ll try” and you’ll find so much more joy to knitting!
Whether you are a brand-new beginner or experienced knitter, I hope you get some mileage out of these tips.  If you’d like to add to my list of beginner tips, please leave a comment below!

We had a monstrously grand time at the 2025 Stitch the Magic event.  Thank you to all of you who attended our gathering.  That bingo game was a lot of noise!  We'll have to think of another game as exciting!

Congratulations to our door prize winners, Allyson and Shelvia, and to our grand prize winner, Ilse!  We can't wait to see the amazing projects you create.

We're taking a break for a bit, but don't worry.  We already have lots of things on paper and tons of ideas flurrying around in our heads on how we want to pull this off.  Keep checking back for the latest info.  Meanwhile, help support our creative team by checking out what keeps them busy when not at our amazing annual event.

The Devil is in the Details...

It’s almost time to scream with laughter as we join together to meet new friends, catch up with those familiar, talk about our love of all things Disney, and stitch the afternoon away.

We will start our gathering at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 25th.  Plan to hang out until around 4:30 PM or until we can’t stitch anymore.  This year’s location is at Disney’s Coronado Springs – Old Lobby.  Where is the old lobby?  It’s on the left side of the tower, just past the bus stops, but not as far as the Convention Center entrance.  Attached is a map showing you our approximate location.

What to bring:
In addition to your lovely selves, feel free to bring your Stitch the Magic WIPs, or any other projects you may be working on.
We do have a few items left of this year’s exclusive merchandise.  If you haven’t already, please support our dyers and crafters and order some cool stuff HERE.  We aren’t allowed to sell on property, so you’ll have to order before you go.  There’s still some yarn, T-shirts, and notions left.

We have a completely full registration this year.  If you are unable to attend, please email:  alicia@beachbunnyyarns.com to let us know.

If you have a park ticket and would like to join us for our park excursion on Sunday, we are playing the day away at the Magic Kingdom.  Don’t worry; you don’t have to spend the whole day with us.  We hope to all get in on the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor and scream with laughter, all the while wearing our 2025 themed T-shirts (so wear ‘em if ya got ‘em).  Please fill out the attached Google form below with your info so we can keep you up to date on where we are.

We are so looking forward to hanging out with you at the Stitch the Magic 2025 event.  See you real soon!

How do I get to Disney’s Coronado Springs?

The first, and coolest, option is to book a room at Coronado Springs Resort.  Then, you’ve got access to all of Disney World’s amenities and the theme parks are just a quick bus ride away.

The second option is to drive to the Coronado Springs Resort.  At the guard gate, tell the guard you are there to dine at Rix Café or the El Mercado food court.  Once you go through the guard gate, take an immediate left into the convention center parking lot.  Head towards the blue-roofed overhang just left of the Disney bus stop.  This option may be limited due to a full parking lot or other events.

Or the third option, park at one of the garages at Disney Springs and catch the bus to Coronado Springs Resort.  Know that the bus ride itself is ~18+ minutes.  Please allow an extra half hour to wait at the bus station in addition to the bus ride so you won’t be late.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Time to reveal our second pattern created just for us this year.  Our knitting pattern comes from another popularly-talented Florida designer: Paula King of KraziKnitz Designs, and is quite stunning worked up using both "That Darn Paperwork" and "Always Watching".  If you wish, you could substitute "Googly Bear" for one of the other colors, and really make a statement!

The Power of Laughter
(click pic to embiggen for closer detail)

From the Designer:

The ending of Monsters, Inc helped me decide on the inspiration for The Power of Laughter Wrap. The stitch patterns is directly inspired by things in the film such as the closet doors that the monsters use to enter the human world. The other stitch patterns showing the generation of energy in the monster world. This wrap pattern is a rectangle worked on the bias, which adds to the tilted world view of this film. They say laughter is the best medicine and the power of it can change worlds.

Paula is offering The Power of Laughter Wrap to our Magic Stitchers at a discounted price, but only for a limited time.  Currently, the pattern is only available for pre-order as a digital pattern here, or you can receive this pattern for free when you pre-order the 23-19 Combo.  Patterns will be distributed once the pre-orders are ready to ship.

About the Designer:

My name is Paula King of KraziKnitz Designs. I am a native of Florida, where I currently reside with my husband. I’ve been designing for several years, primarily drawing my inspiration from nature. I work at my local yarn shop, Knit and Stitch boutique in Cocoa Village on Florida’s Space Coast.

The Eyes Have It!

Celia:  So, uh, are we going anywhere special tonight?
Mike:  I…I just got us into a little place called, um, Harryhausen’s
Celia:  Harryhausen’s?  But it’s impossible to get a reservation there.
Mike: Not for Googly Bear.

Bet you all thought the collection was complete, right?  We thought so too, and then we took a step back and realized that one character was seriously under-represented...

Yup, you guessed it!  Mike Wazowski; our lovable, manic, green, one-eyed hero, and boyfriend to his one-and-only Schmoopsie-poo, Celia Mae.

So Beach Bunny Yarns got right on rectifying that oversight, and voila!   We are proud to present...

Googly Bear!

Dyed on the same 80/20 SW Merino/Silk, 4 oz/115 gm-434 yds/397 m base as our other 2 colorways, Googly Bear is just the right shade of Mike Wazowski green which just so happens to be a natural contrast to both That Darn Paperwork and Always Watching; and perfect when used with one or both of our original colorways for those gorgeous 2 or 3 color pattern designs that are all the rage...which brings us to our next offering.

We've already introduced our standard collection:  The CDA Combo.  This year, we have a second, "Deluxe" Collection we like to call the 23-19 Combo.  As with the CDA Combo, a portion from the sale of each 23-19 Combo will be donated to Delilah's 2nd Chance Rescuea non-profit (501(c)(3)) animal rescue organization of Port St. Lucie, FL.

In your 23-19 Combo you will receive:

1 skein of each "That Darn Paperwork", "Googly Bear" and "Always Watching"
"Keep the Doors Coming" reversible project bag
"It's a Scream" notions canister
Free shipping
Bonus Mystery Item valued at $12

Plus...

As an even greater incentive, you will receive a free digital copy of either the knitting pattern or crochet pattern, designed exclusively for Stitch the Magic 2025 by 2 very talented local designers, We will be introducing both designs within the week, and I'm very excited!  Patterns will be release close to the shipping date of your combo.

Pre-orders for the 23-19 Deluxe Combo are open now but will close on January 17, 2025. After which, you may be able to purchase any surplus items individually, but The Combo (the incentives) will no longer be available.   Quantities are limited, so order early to ensure availability.

When ordering select either 23-19 Combo – Knit Pattern, or 23-19 – Crochet Pattern depending on which pattern you wish to be included with your combo.

Ook-lay in the Ag-bay...

Sulley:  Mike, that's not her door.
Mike:  What are you talking about? Of course it's her door. It's her door.
Sulley:  No. Her door was white and it had flowers on it.
Mike:  No. It must've been dark last night because this is its door.

No Stitch the Magic collection is complete without an amazing project bag, and this year's does not disappoint!  Amanda from YBSquare has done it again with the Keep the Doors Coming Project Bag!

From the Artist:

Monsters Inc has been one of my favorites since its release. I did struggle a little with fabrics for this one. The doors were easy but the other fabric, not so much. There is so much to work with! Sushi, those awesome glasses, different monsters, kids toys, the CDA, … I went with a Code 23-19 reference
. Do you recognize the monster George Sanderson coloring and the infamous sock?

About the bags: they are complete reversible, so you can pick which side to show each day. As these are handmade, the fabric placement will vary.  Each bag has a cotton webbing handle for wrist wearing, a carabiner for clipping to most anything and a cord lock on the drawstring.  It is also machine washable, just remove the carabiner and wash on delicate.

 ~~~Amanda
The measurements for this bag are 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 boxed bottom; 11 1/2 inches tall and 20 3/4" around.  Measurements may vary up to 1/4".  Whether your chosen fiber art expression is knitting, crochet, weaving drop-spindling, or hand embroidery, this bag Is the perfect size for the fiber artist on-the-go.
Pre-sales will open once the entire collection has been revealed, and, as last year, there will be a bonus item for those who order the entire collection, but we'll cover that in another post.
But wait there's more to come from Monstropolis!...in our next post.  Stay tuned!
I've got my Eye on You...
Roz:  Hello, Wazowski. Fun-filled evening planned for tonight?
Mike:  Well, as a matter of fact...
Roz:  Then I'm sure you filed your paperwork correctly, for once.
[Mike smiles innocently]
Roz:  Your stunned silence is very reassuring.
Always Watching”, this year’s 2nd colorway is from Dizzy Blonde Studios in Port Saint Lucie, FL and was inspired by Roz, the administrator and key master of Scare Floor F, who is also tasked with ensuring all paperwork is filled out properly and turned in at the end of every shift…something Mike Wazowski can’t quite seem to manage…a constant thorn in Roz's side to be sure.
"Always Watching" is dyed up on the same 80/20 SW Merino/Silk, 4 oz/115 gm-434 yds/397 m of soft, lustrous luxury as "That Darn Paperwork".  The Dizzy Blonde chose Deep burgundy for Roz' cardigan, and steely gray for her mohawk are the prominent colors, with a dash of slug umber to warm things up a smidge and pop against the dominant cooler palette.
Laura has been knitting for over 20 years, first introduced to the craft by a very close friend who worked in the film industry, and was growing weary of losing her knitting friends when a show wrapped. Dizzy Blonde Studios was born out of Laura’s love for knitting, designing, and all things fiber. In 2008, she ventured into the world of color application to yarn as an additional creative outlet, and a way to find her zen.
Inspired by her passion for Science Fiction, pet rescue, and Disney, Laura creates fresh and unique colorways using different techniques on various yarn bases. From highly variegated to tonal-shift and saturated solids, there's a perfect colorway waiting for you at Dizzy Blonde Studios.
Pre-sales will open once the entire collection has been revealed, and, as last year, there will be a bonus item for those who order the entire collection, but we'll cover that in another post.
Stay tuned!  More to come!
No Job is Finished Until the Paperwork is done
Wazowski! You didn't file your paperwork last night...
...when Mike Wazowski forgets to file his paperwork (yet again) before going on a date with Celia, his best friend Sulley steps up to help...
 Mike to Sulley: The pink copies go to accounting, the fuchsia ones go to purchasing, and the goldenrod ones go to Roz. [Celia pulls him away; he comes back] Leave the puce!
Our first colorway in this year's collection is from Beach Bunny Yarns in Ormond Beach, FL, and it is gorgeous!  Dyed on a base of 80/20 SW Merino/Silk, 4 oz/115 gm-434 yds/397 m of soft, lustrous luxury, "That Darn Paperwork" is super-soft and luxuriously lightweight, has amazing stitch definition and is wonderful to crochet and knit.
This yarn is the Bunny’s take on this mountain of paperwork to be filed.  Pink, fuchsia, and of course, puce are the main colors with a little goldenrod to balance the palette and keep Roz happy.  It’s highly variegated and as disorganized as Wazowski’s paperwork, which only adds to the beauty of this particular colorway.
Don’t worry, no one is watching!
Ron of Beach Bunny Yarns has been knitting and crocheting for over 20 years and is always looking for new challenges.  He enjoy teaching and sharing his fiber knowledge as well.  He firmly believe that anyone can knit or crochet!
As a maker, he always struggled to find similar skeins of yarn in coordinating or complementing colors, and he created Beach Bunny Yarns five years ago to ensure that fiber artists could pick from a broad selection of color palettes in a variety of great yarn bases.  "I love the creative and technical processes of dyeing and hope that my yarn brings you joy in all your creations!"  He is joined by his wife Alicia aka "she of the many hats":  Executive Director of Food & Beverage Distribution, Senior Yarn-Washer, Website Manager, Senior Stress Facilitator, and Chief Bunny Motivator...just to name a few!
Pre-sales will open once the entire collection has been revealed, and, as last year, there will be a bonus item for those who order the entire collection, but we'll cover that in another post.  Don't let this beauty pass you by!  That Darn Paperwork won't knit itself!
We Scare Because We Care
On Saturday, January 25, 2025, we will be hosting the meet-up in our new location at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort where there is plenty of seating both inside and outdoors, so there's a place for us no matter what the weather throws at us!  More on the exact location as we get closer to the event date.  Festivities begin at 1:00pm and will end around 4:30pm.  The event is completely free to attend, you only need to worry about parking which might not be much of a problem if you intend to have lunch or stay later for dinner at one of the several table service or quick service restaurants.  Just let the guard know at the entrance to the resort.
We encourage you to bring your stitching projects, be it knitting, crochet, cross stitch or spinning...it's all good!  Beach Bunny Yarns and Dizzy Blonde Studios will be your hosts for this magical occasion.  There will be some fun activities, prizes of the yarny nature and goodie bags for all registered attendees.
Speaking of which, registration for the meet-up is now open at Beach Bunny Yarns' webpage.  Space is limited, so make sure you register early and save the date!
Then on Sunday, January 26, 2025, we will be spending a magical day at Disney's Magic Kingdom Park, home of Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor!  If you are purchasing admission for the day, I believe there is no need to make reservations.  However, if you are an annual passholder, don't forget to make your reservations for the park.
Looking forward to seeing you all!
Ni karibu wakati
The time is almost here!
Meeting Time:  Saturday, January 20th, 12:00 pm
Meeting Location:  Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge - Jambo House
We're so excited to see you all at the 2024 Stitch the Magic event this Saturday!  We've been watching the weather and it seems to change hour by hour.  We have 2 options and we'll just have to wing it that morning.  We will post Mr. Bunny at the lobby entrance to direct you where we'll be.
(click on map to enlarge)
Option 1:  The Uzima Pool area (down the elevator/stairs and follow the signs), behind The Mara quick service restaurant.
Option 2:  The Sunset Overlook on the left side of the lobby behind the check-in desks.
We've got some fun activities in store for you all, including ways to earn more chances to win one of the door prizes!  We highly encourage everyone to bring their knit or crochet project for some show & tell and social stitching.
The Mara is a quick-service restaurant offering a variety of snacks and meals.  And the pool bar opens at 11:00 in case you enjoy a little adult beverage during social gatherings (I know I do!)  Everyone is welcome to purchase food and beverages to be consumed during the meet-up.
For those who have not already picked up their pre-ordered Pride Rock Packs, we will have them at the event for you to collect.  For those who have ordered T-shirts prior to the first deadline, we'll be distributing those there as well.  There are public restrooms close to each of our possible locations for a quick change, if you so desire.
If you'll be joining us on Sunday, January 21, 2024 in the Animal Kingdom Theme Park, please fill out the Theme Park Excursion Registration form with your contact information so we can let keep you up to date on all the details:  When and where to meet us, etc.
And finally, where to park for free to get to Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge?
  1. If you are a annual pass-holder, you can park at any of the theme parks and catch the resort bus to AKL - Jambo House.
  2. You can park at one of the Disney Springs' garages and catch the bus to AKL - Jambo House.  The bus ride itself is 30+ minutes and can be standing room only at times.  Please allow an extra half hour or more to wait at the bus station in addition to the us ride so you won't be late and miss out on some of the fun.
  3. You can try your luck at Animal Kingdom Lodge itself.  Drive to the AKL main gate and kindly ask the gate guard for entrance.  If there is no other big event, or if they are feeling generous, they may let you park as a day guest.  You can tell them that you are going to the Mara restaurant, or going to the gift shop.  Since Stitch the Magic isn't an official event, they will not recognize it as such, so any mention might get you a blank stare.  If that doesn't work, parking at Disney Springs is your best option, however, please allow yourself plenty of time, just in case.
Looking forward to seeing everyone very soon!
Monday, January 8, 2024
Hela hey mamela
My favorite song in the entire movie "He Lives In You" scores Simba's transformation moment from carefree  youth, to regal adulthood: when Simba comes to terms with and then relinquishes his heavy burden of guilt and regret, he accepts his responsibility, his birthright, and his freedom.  Such anguish...such joy!  When first I saw it, it took my breath away...so serious and somber one moment, and then light-hearted and playful the next.
Our final piece of the 2024 Stitch The Magic Collection comes from Ann of Twin Mommy Creations out of Winter Haven FL.
"Remember Who You Are" is beautiful set of 5 adorable stitch markers and a pin/marker holder.  Each stitch marker is laser engraved on 1/8" maple ply and then attached with round lever-back fasteners so they can be used as knitting stitch markers, row markers or crochet markers.  They depict whimsical mandrills, hyenas, wart hogs, merekats and lions. The pin is also laser engraved on 1/8 maple ply and painted with alcohol ink for a lovely sunset effect.
The back of the pin features a pin tack back and rubber stopper.  This set is extremely lightweight, and can be worn on your person as you stitch in your favorite Disney park, or attached to your project bag so you are never without it.  Wherever you choose to attach it, this set is sure to turn some heads!
Presales will be opening very soon, and remember, there are incentives to purchasing the entire collection, which will be revealed in our next post, along with a link to the pre-order site.
 Registration is now open at the Beach Bunny Yarns websiteSpace is limited, however, so make sure you register early, and save the date.
Save the Date!
  Hello again, Disney Stitchers!  Mark your calendars for the  2026 Stitch the Magic   event. January 31-February 1, 2026 Keep following us ...
